Odoo Community or Enterprise: how to decide
A five-question decision framework, rather than a feature-by-feature comparison.
A feature-by-feature comparison leads nowhere: it changes with every Odoo version. Five questions are enough to decide, and they are about your organisation, not about the software.
1. How many real users do you have?
Enterprise is billed per user per year. Community is not billed at all. In an organisation of a few dozen users, the cumulative gap over three years funds a large share of the configuration work — often the decisive argument.
2. Do you need a module reserved for Enterprise?
The honest answer is: sometimes. Some advanced functions are reserved for it. The right approach is to identify which ones you genuinely need — not which ones look appealing in a demo.
3. Who will provide support?
Enterprise entitles you to the vendor's support. With Community, your integrator carries that responsibility. So the question is not "support or no support", but "which support, with what response time, and written down where".
4. What is your upgrade strategy?
Enterprise offers a migration service between versions. With Community, migration is a project to budget for. If you plan to follow every major version, that weighs; if you stay several years on a stable version, far less so.
5. Will your custom developments be numerous?
The further your business moves from the standard, the more custom work you will develop — and the more Community's freedom becomes a structural advantage.
Our position
We work on Community by default, because it leaves the budget for configuration. But it is a starting position, not a dogma: the trade-off is settled during the scoping study, with figures to back it.
